"Development through drama!"
Our Principal
Melissa Wessels
B.Soc (Drama/Psych) & PGCEMy journey with the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy began during my university years, when I worked part-time as a drama teacher. I was studying for a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in drama and psychology. Through the Helen O’Grady Drama System, my passion for children’s development grew and led me to earn my Post Graduate Certificate in Education, qualifying me as a Dramatic Arts teacher. After six years of service at the Academy, I was promoted to Vice Principal. Shortly after, the opportunity arose for me to step into the role of Principal in 2019.
I was that shy child, intimately familiar with the anxiety of public speaking – whether it was putting my hand up in class to answer a question or having to present an oral or read aloud in front of my peers. Growing up, I lacked access to drama programmes that could have transformed my confidence, so I made it my mission to bring these holistic lessons into schools that do not offer Dramatic Arts. After joining the Academy, I knew I would be able to expand this reach, bringing vital, creative tools to students who otherwise have little exposure to Dramatic Arts. I dedicated myself to helping children overcome their struggles with self-expression.
I empower children and teens by providing a creative outlet that builds confidence, nurtures self-assurance, and improves communication skills. This allows them to overcome shyness, find their voice and learn to express themselves to the world around them. What sets us apart is our specialized, unique, developmental drama programme. By prioritizing personal growth over performance, we create a nurturing environment where every child feels seen, valued and supported in finding their sense of belonging.
