I joined the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy because, at one point in my life, I needed a voice. Three simple words changed everything: “Drama Teacher Wanted”. Responding to this call, being trained in the Helen O’Grady Drama System, and teaching classes part time opened up the opportunity to become the Principal of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy in Durban. I now have the privilege of leading active studios and school partnerships, as well as a passionate team of qualified teachers.

As a teen living in the UK, I needed a safe space where I could express myself freely. When I had the opportunity to choose my A/AS Level subjects at school, I jumped at the opportunity of studying Performing Arts, Theatre Studies and Media. I knew this path would give me the freedom and confidence that I wanted.

However, like many people, once I left school, I placed my dreams on hold to appease the voices around me. In doing so, I slowly silenced my own voice and watched my confidence fade. Instead of pursuing my love for theatre and media, I studied a BA (Hons) in Business, followed by a Master’s (MSc) in International Shipping and Logistics.

Fourteen years later, everything changed with those three simple words: “Drama Teacher Wanted.” Life had gently led me back to where I was always meant to be. Looking back, I realised my journey had never been wasted. My years in business development, marketing and media had equipped me with invaluable experience and taught me that confidence is built by believing in yourself, having the courage to speak your mind and approaching life with a fearless attitude.

Everyone is unique in their form, and at the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy, we are not here to measure one child against another but to elevate and highlight the qualities that make us unique. Our approach is firmly rooted in “developmental drama” which centres around the ongoing development of oneself. This transformative curriculum has been helping children across South Africa communicate with confidence and develop the courage to be authentically themselves. The result of this is a life of freedom, purpose and lasting impact. Today, my mission is to pass this knowledge on to every child, young person and family I have the privilege of serving, and to extend that impact across Africa and, one day, the world.
